Christians Who Left the Faith

I will specifically be speaking about three evangelical Christians who were active in their respective ministries, but surprisingly left the Faith. I’m absolutely sure there are thousands like them, and when I searched Google, I saw many of them, ordained ministers then became atheists or agnotics.

But in this article, I will talk about Dan Barker, George Perdikis and Jerome Suson, and I will cite reasons why they left. I maybe wrong with my opinion, but I based it on my personal observations and analysis.

christians who left atheists agnostics

1. Dan Barker. He was a minister and musician for 19 years, then became an atheist in 1984.

I first learned about him through Ray Comfort’s Facebook post. And according to Comfort, he emailed Barker telling him about how “good he was of hiding his true belief” all those years.

His criticim about Christianity: “How happy can you be when you think every action and thought is being monitored by a judgmental ghost?”

What I think he left the Christian faith?: Either he did not have a personal relationship with Christ, he just “joined” the Christian religion.

Well, majority of Christianity just “joined” but do not really have a born-again experience (not the born-again group).

2. George Perdikis. One of the founding members of the Christian rock band Newsboys recently came out as an atheist in a Patheos post in January 21 of this year. Newsboys’ song was used in the movie God’s Not Dead, although he already embraced atheism in 2007.

His criticim about Christianity: “The Christian music scene is populated by many people who act as though they have a direct hotline to a God who supplies them with the answers to the Universe. There seems to be more ego and narcissism amongst Christian musicians than their secular counterparts.”

What I think he left the Christian faith?: He probably was not really a Christian when he joined the band, or maybe he was, but was disappointed to witness Christians who aren’t practicing their faith.

3. Jerome Suson. A Filipino musician and composer who hails from Surigao City. I’ve heard and sang in church some of his songs, mostly in Cebuano lyrics, not knowing that it was him who composed it. This man can be considered a musical icon amongst Christian circles.

I only heard from a friend about his leaving the faith. Allegedly, he is an “anti-Christ” as my friend described him. So I sent him a message on his Facebook to specifically asked about his stance, but he did not reply.

I went to his Facebook profile and read some of his posts. I can’t tell if he is an atheist, anti-Christ or agnostic.

His criticim about Christianity: He criticizes Jesus Christ and the New Testament books. Basically, he does not believe that Jesus is the Christ.

But he also post admirations of Israel and the Jews. I think he has a Judaic beliefs.

What I think he left the Christian faith?: His foundation about his faith was built on a sand as Jesus said in Matthew 7:24-27.

According to my source, he was curious about interesting and controversial articles he found online, mostly with anti-Christianity message.

Common reason why they left the Christian faith. All three of them are musicians. A lot of musicians in the Christian faith lack the study of the Bible on a higher level.

I think they thought playing music for God is enough, and reading the Bible is just secondary.

So when problems, testing and other teachings get into their minds, their foundation crumbles, and replaced by the “other” teachings contrary to the faith.
