How Should an Asian React to Racism.

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Wherever we roam around, in the streets of the United States, Europe, on the radio, music, television, the internet especially in the chatrooms, in Youtube. You could hear, see and read racist remarks hurled against Asians.

But they are not what they seemingly appear to be.

Asians should NOT at all feel belittled by the antics of the racists. We Asians need to build up our own confidence, thus we need to educate ourselves on some things we already have that those racists enormously don’t have.

Asians need to know the following:

1. Those racists simply feel threatened or jealous of the Asians’ abilities, talent, skills, and intelligence. So to mask their personal insecurities they cry bigot words towards Asians.

-In the ESPN spelling contest I could see a lot of participants of Asian physical appearance. I thought they comprised about half of the total number of contestants.

-In the internet technology, the names of people involved are of Indian sounding names. The founders of Google are of Asian descents.

2. Probably some racists are just accidental. They could be simply naïve. I suppose they were fed with wrong information especially by the media.

-A friend who works as a nurse in Ireland was so furious when an Ireland asked him, “Do you have Coke in cans in the Philippines?” I told my friend to be considerate, that Irish could have only watched the poverty side of the Philippines on TV.

3. We Asians are also racists in some ways. We should not cry as if we are victims of abuse by those racists. We ourselves are guilty of racism as well.

Who is more evil in Black versus White in Zimbabwe?

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

On April 15, 2000 a white farmer was shot dead by black Zimbabweans. Those black Zimbabweans were just squatters of the white farmer’s land.

When I read the first two paragraphs of the news article, I was a bit mad. Those killers were just squatters of his land, and they killed him?!

But as I continued to read on, it became clearer. The blacks were demanding to return the land that were unfairly taken from them and given to the white settlers during the white rule.

Who is more evil? Honestly, not easy to answer. But I will try act accordingly to the Christian teachings I learned, as if I have learned something, hehe.

But if I was that white man who got killed, I would probably have given a portion of my land to the black Zimbabweans.

If I was one of the black Zimbabweans, I would appropriately ask a portion of that white man’s land, and if he would not give me any I would still not join in with the other blacks to kill the white farmer.

My Mindanao Mind and the Metro Manila Media

Friday, March 21st, 2008

What the media conveys is accepted by the masses with arms wide open not considering if the content is right or wrong. Racial and ethnic stereotyping in Philippine media has been going on unchecked and accepted as normal, especially in the previous century, although I observed that there has been a “slight” reduction of such the past few years.

As a child growing up in Mindanao I was made to believed that my first language Cebuano was the most inferior language or dialect in the world. I thought tagalog was in the upper level of status, a notch lower than English.

I could still vividly remember we had a neighbor who got married in Manila; she brought her kids with her for a long vacation. Her two kids were the stars and had all the special attention when all the children including me played with them. A month or two later, her kids started to speak a little Cebuano. She freaked out. Her kids should not speak an inferior language, she brought her kids back to Manila. At the back of my seven year old mind, I agreed with her.

Metro Manila t.v. shows made me think that way. Our language and accent was the constant subject of bigot jokes in comedy shows. My reaction was just laughed it off thinking it was just normal. Media is a powerful tool that even the erroneous or non-existent ideas are born acceptable.

Take for example the words “soccer” and “football.” Americans call the number one sport in the world “soccer” because they’ve created their own and called it “football.” Since the US is considered the media center of the world, the word “soccer” has been the accepted name for “football.” Although the word/sport “football” was invented by England thirty years before the Americans had their own brand of football.

Thank God, i got educated in Cebu, it was there that i learned to love my first language, to be vocal of the stupidity of the Manila media, thus this blog.

Call Center Blooper

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

There was a topic posted at Pinoyexchange about a new call center being setup in Cebu City. Then a member replied taunted the Cebuanos’ English accent basically saying that American clients are harsh if they find out that the technical support are outsourced somewhere in Asia.

That ignorant member could be watching too much racist tagalog movies where an uneducated Visayan housemaid with weird accent is made the center of bigot jokes.

I found a video on Youtube. A call center agent with an obvious tagalog accent was trying hard to sound American (required on most call centers), but fell short. She even told the caller that she is a Fil-American in California…..in Ortigas Center! Hear on the 4:30 part of the video. Better if you listen to this from start to finish.

My conclusion, don’t make fun of other people’s accent. It’s just simply a racist thing to do.

The Brown Monkey and the White Monkey

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

A Caucasian American Christian missionary for Assemblies of God was assigned to start a church someplace in Iligan City in Mindanao. This missionary had some obvious racist’s antics towards the locals there. One of which was he didn’t want any Filipinos to set foot inside their home, everyone except for one brown, Filipino pastor.

This pastor is intelligent, hardworking. He speaks decent English. He wanted to be a lawyer, but shifted to the Bible school when the calling to become a pastor just kept on bugging him. These things are probably one of the reasons why that American missionary liked him. He was my pastor while I was in Cebu.

In one of their normal chitchats, this Filipino pastor was eating a banana. Then the American missionary turned to him and said, “Oh, look the brown monkey is eating a banana!” Then the Filipino pastor replied in jest, “White monkeys eat bananas too!” The racist pastor with a blank face obviously was taken aback after he heard that reply.

The Filipino pastor meant it for plain fun, but that American missionary intended it as a racial joke.

So if you’re an Asian, African or whatever you are, do away with that “victim mentality” and stop saying “That’s totally uncalled for!”

If you look closely at the skins of the Caucasians, you will see that it’s really dirty and their armpits smell bad too!

Don’t take the last comment seriously, because my armpit smells like a dead rat.

Evil begets evil. Racism begets racism.

African Americans Hostile Toward Asians?

Friday, July 6th, 2007

After i saw the picture of Pearson, a US judge who sued the Korean American owners of a laundry shop Custom Cleaners for $64 Million over a lost pair of pants, it instantly confirmed the comment of my Filipino friend about African Americans.Thankfully, Pearson lost his battle to earn that millions of dollars.

My friend works as a programmer for a popular watch company in the US. He has had first hand experiences of unfavorable things done by African Americans.

My friend’s car door got dented when another car owned by a black person parked beside his. The other person purposely opened his car door with force and wide that it hit the door of my friend’s car.

Although, this friend of mine told me that a few of them are really good, but generally they’re unfriendly toward Asians.

Probably African Americans are envious of Asians’ for being generally doing good financially? I could be wrong though.

Discrimination in the Church

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

The story that I am about to tell you happened many years ago inside a born-again Christian church in the capital city of the Philippines. This was recalled to me by a Cebuano friend who migrated to Manila together with her husband.

A young graduating student pastor who hailed from Surigao was asked to preach one Easter Sunday morning. It was part of his baptism of fire before doing fulltime as a pastor in his hometown.

The church that he was about to preach in has a bible school and satellite churches in almost major provincial cities around the country. It has high profiled members including showbiz personalities, and a number of wealthy families. (more…)

The Root of Racial Discrimination

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

Money is generally the root of racial or ethnical discrimination. It’s not about the color of the skin, not the accent or the language, nor about the educational status. It’s money.

Money has also used the media to indirectly or directly support racial or ethnical discrimination. Money in itself is not bad.

Caucasians. Why do the Caucasians (used to or still) think of their race as higher than the other races? You can answer it by yourself by looking at the countries dominated by the white people. Let me name a few like England, USA, Germany, France, Australia, Spain, Belgium. These countries belong to the first world category. They were the first to cover their selves with cloth while at the time the Southeast Asians and South Americans were still wearing leaves and shrubs.

Since the white race has the money, (more…)
